    No, hot patch cords are definately not normal. The remote turn on is not likely the issue either. If everything is turned off, the remote should have 0 voltage to it. Sounds more like a short. Probably have a screw run through a wire somewhere, probably into the patch cord.

    Stiffening capacitor will go a long way to fix this.

    dimming issues with 4kw

    You certainly have enough current available but your voltage is dropping way low. Put a large capacitor in the system and you will see a huge difference.
