yeah im just trying to figure out why it worked for a lil bit then stopped incorrect wiring? bad amp? or maybe too much power?

I tried hooking up a 10" pioneer sub to a 300 watt amp. It worked about 5 mins then the sub stopped. I checked out the amp and noticed smoke coming out of it. Any ideas why this happened? I'm not willing to shell out some more cash yet.
