i never heard of a software update either but you can make sure the ipod software is up to date.

is the 420 plugged into the right spot on the d310 brain? is the ipod turned on before you plug it in? is the ipod locked? i have the d310 with the 420 and i always make sure the ipod is on (screen lit up not playing music) and i just plug it in. make sure you're going into the cd changer...

didn't something like this happen not to long ago? the us navy was sitting there and up pops an enemy submarine. the scary part was the us didn't know they were there until the sub came to the surface.
