Yes they will run at 2 ohms just that they become very inefficient meaning that at 2 ohms you will not be getting much more power than at 4 ohms but they are 2 ohm stable.

The 7998 being a 79 series alpine should be the better sq unit as it probably has better preamp section and better components it also has the external dc-dc converter which the 78 series doesn't get.

JVC has much better sq. I have heard a few and they are very impressive.

Alpine controls can get a bit annoying as you always seem to be turning the rotary knob
