try cleaning the iac motor with some brake cleaner if that doesnt work check your tps or throttle position sensor voltage it should be at .98 with the key on not running.

your 97 does the ****** shift 1-2 very hard? 96-99 explorers had problems with a valve body gasket pretty easy fix fyi.
