    Cone getting warm

Had a few beers tonight so forgive me if this post could have been written better.... Not too familiar with this particular sub but this could be normal. Voice coil heats up, former then heats up, cone/dustcap then heats up. Subs aren't very efficient and most of the power you deliver to them...

    look at this beast!!!

Are we even talking about the same program? When I say FEMM I'm talking about this specific program which is a free 2D magnetics FEA program. Quentin has and also uses SpeaD and Reverse SpeaD (not free and made available from Redrock Acoustics). I can only assume he used FEMM to design the...

Valid point, no reason why he shouldn't have them readily available. I believe he has even mentioned in his forum that he has a DATS, so he could at least give us some quick ballpark figures. I'm not going to lie, this is news to me. I have FEMM installed on my PC as well, and I am not aware of...

    12 xxx vs sundown x12?

Ok, let's just pick your post apart word by word. Let's start with this, "stiff af suspensions". True or false, stiffness affects a drivers efficiency?

    12 xxx vs sundown x12?

Listen, to be completely honest I'm not going to sit here and spend hours explaining to you how subwoofers work. I browse forums for fun and like to throw in my two cents for posts that could use correction. I understand that you do not know me so you probably don't take my word so If...

    Upgrade from an Obsidian 15?

x2, I do not think you will notice much of a difference changing to a different 15" sub with all else staying the same. Your best bet would be to increase cone area.

    12 xxx vs sundown x12?

That's exactly what I am saying. Why would a SPL purpose driver be inefficient? That makes no sense at all. Efficiency is power out for power in. Why would it be built with a heavy cone? You want as light, and stiff as a cone as possible. High BL^2/Re and low Mms are your main priorities in...

    12 xxx vs sundown x12?

Unfortunately I am not going to spend any decent amount of time answering these questions, but just know what I said is true. If you truly care enough to know why, you will do some research and will eventually be able to answer your own question.

    power handling

I'm sure you'll be ok as long as you don't clip it. However you can set the gain a little lower to make up for the difference if you are worried.

    12 xxx vs sundown x12?

To answer the OP's question, it depends. What kind of room do you have to work with? What kind of power do you have on tap? Are you going ported, sealed, etc.? Is weight an issue? What's your budget?

    12 xxx vs sundown x12?

No And also no. These two subs were definitely not meant as SPL only subs. Fs, Mms and BL^2/Re is a good place to start looking as to why. If I were to select these drivers, it would be because I wanted a monster low frequency daily driver.

    look at this beast!!!

This is his thread on SSA about it. No T/S specs available yet apparently, and everything seems to be based off his FEMM model. Here are a few pics I found. Doesn't look like he has uploaded any FEMM models using the SPL coil yet though. Will be interesting once he does get T/S specs.

As I'm sure you know, I highly doubt he is referencing BL^2/Re. Having a BL^2/Re in the high 20's would be a joke for what his intention are for this design or just about any subwoofer design IMO.
