Awesome that you are thinking that far ahead and asking questions...kudos to you. IMHO, I would not mount to the sub box directly for the simple reasoning of direct vibration of internal parts ( I also think about theft, if they take your box...well they get the amp as a bonus as well.) Now...

Run the sub rca's to your mid/high amp and see if any sound comes out. That will point to either the rca's or the input on the amp as you have mentioned before. Good luck.

I went to a Slangin Audio on Broadway to see if they could sell me a face plate to a DEH-5000ub. They guy behind the counter had no idea what I was looking for and so he went into the shop area to get another guy out to talk to me. He reek of weed...this guy was so high he should be walking...
