I have worked with that same wire before, it has plastic bits running throughout the conductor. It's a little messy to solder. Wire is cheap, just think of the wire thats in there as a free stringer and pull it out with the new stuff attached.

Do you have the dimmer wire hooked up? That's how I have it set up in my Regal, all I have to do to kill the system is push the headlight rotary switch in. If you don't want this to happen try disconnecting the wire.
