Go with the amp. If you keep good tabs on them you can find a good alpine amp on e-bay for $100-$150 that will be good enough for what you have. I have two vehicles with all alpine setups and most of the R series speakers need amps to sound anything close to the way they are meant to sound.

Watch what you put in the back, in my 95 Silverado I have a problem with mid-bass vibrating the stupid plastic of the molding the covers them. I am getting ready to change them out and keep the mid bass out of the corners or at least out from behind that plastic.

It's under the setup menu. look for IC ON/OFF. Once you get there you may have to push the rotary dial to change it. I have a 9851 and my daughter has a 9885 and that is how they work.
