Ported box hurt my ears

possibly. maybe the tuning is too high
Make one/have one made that is tuned low (31-32Hz is good IMO) and built well (I can make one for you if you'd like...PM me if you're interested)

And let us know the specs on the enclosure (dimensions, port dimensions including how long it is, etc.) and we can tell you if your tuning is off..

 
if your box is tuned to 100hz it doesn't mean a 30hz note will some how be 'higher', it'll just have very little presence compared to a 100-120hz note

your explanation of your issue doesn't make sense
