I'm a noob at serious car audio, I know enough to get the job done right; but when the job has gone wrong I'm STUCK

My friends setup is not working properly, his subwoofer will only operate if the bass levels are low and so is the volume; if either are turned up, past rather low, the sub does nothing?

It was working well for a long time, the he said it just stopped...

possible short in the wiring. inspect all speaker wiring, power wiring, etc. if you can see any bare copper, it needs to be fixed. remove the subs, make sure proper terminals are used (i.e. no wrapping wire around terminals).
