I think the rope is applied where the cone meets the coil former so there is more contact area for the CA, providing a stronger joint.

 
Unless you're building the sub, it's pretty hard to see the rope since DD puts beads of glue on top of the rope. Their gluing technique is the best I've every seen in the industry. With each sub built, over 80 signatures are required for the build and quality control. Yes, you read right! After each part is assembled, a signature is required. It takes DD almost 10X the amount to build a sub compared to most other manufacturers. It's no wonder why they're without question one of the best in the industry.
