Amp going into protect = defective amp

So I've had this kicker sx500.2 for a few months now and every once i a while it will go into protect for a few seconds then turn back on. It has started doing it more often the last couple days. For instance on my 10 min. drive home from school it happened 3 times today. It gets pretty annoying and i don't know what is causing it. I used to think it could be low voltage im using 8 gauge power wire but it still happens when the volume is real low. I don't think its getting to hot either because the highest temp. it has recorded is 144 F which isn't very hot for an amp right? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The thing i noticed about my kicker zx700.5 is that it doesn't really like running hot. I am in Seattle, so it doesn't get hot here. It's just that i have it installed in somewhat a close 'compartment'. Not sealed, but close, if you seen a trunk of a MDX, u know what i mean.

During peak summer time, after about an hour of continous playing, it would cut in and out. Problem resolve if i remove the compartment cover and let air flow through. So check your installationg for adequate air flow.

I'm running it at 4 ohms on each channel. I wonder if heat could be my problem too? It seems to almost always do it atleast once on 90+ days. It is also mounted to the back of my back seat which does fold down but is folded up 99% of the time maybe folding it down on hot days would fix the problem?
