any psycjological theories on men and bass?

I was just pondering what a psychologist would deduce from observing us audiophiles. What is the psychological factor that drives us into pumpin out the most amount of bass, dreaming of more speakers, wishing for bigger subs, and spending so much time and money on such a hobbie. Are we filling the voids in our lives with crisp thunderous bass or compensating for what we are lacking with enourmous subwoofers? I've thought about the same thing, and come to this conclusion: It's just a hobby. Everyone has stupid hobbies that aren't productive and for the most part are really expensive. If i didn't spend money on speakers, i'd prolly spend it on something else that nobody but me and a handful of goofs cares about.

now SQ guys......those are the ones that have mental problems.

being a psychology major, I am uniquely (not that much so) qualified to answer this question.

freud would have a heyday with this one, but it is coming to pass in the realm of psychology that freud is bunk and empiricism (thank god) is taking over.

this is my theory:

bass and high end car audio, believe it or not is a byproduct of evolution. Men have certain traits that give them a reproductive advantage. A while ago, simply strong men stopped having an advantage and smarter ones started to get an advantage. There is a certain bodily health requisite it appears, that women need, but what caused men to make the most babies in societies that have rudimentary culture and civilization is intelligence. Evolutionarily, women will select and hold a mate that will provide them with the most security and food. What sort of man can provide security and food? A strong one? sure, but only to a certain degree. There are other factors that can provide much security and food that the evolutionarily driven woman desires. Men, are statistically better at tasks requiring spatial perception. This isn't a mistake, because spacial perception will cause men to hunt better, think and strategize about the catch of animals and devising and creating tools in which to provide more food, more safety, beat down other competing men and make weapons to do all of the above. Spatial perception coupled with planning ability which will help all of the above provides for some excellent traits in humans in general. This basically is the heart and soul of engineering, spacial perception and planning.

Car audio is a man's wet dream because it is so complicated and requires so many of the traits that evolution has come to give us. it seems that since evolution has given us spacial ability and planning, we are also compelled to use it. Add in our natural tendancy to compete (get the women, beat down other men through force or status) and the formula for car audio competition and high end equipment is born. But, all of this does indeed boil down to ***, because in our evolution, it was women who has driven us to have a genetic inclination toward spatial perception and planning, and it was our desire for *** that caused the frequency of these traits to propogate in the human gene pool.

it's 5:54 am and I haven't slept, so I'm not extremely eloquent or articulate in my explantion, but the nuts and bolts are there. If you have any questions or comments, I would be most pleased to answer, clarify or outright flame you if you're wrong.

I've spent 4500+ on my system, retail is about 12,000...

hours for installation and planning, too many to count.

I am a typical cerebral male, not much on the physical bruteness department, but 150,00 years ago, I would ahve made a mean arrow to put right in between your eyes before a strong man could reach me to beat me down.
