Yes, another 'which sub' topic

I have a '16 Chrysler 300 with the 6 speaker Alpine system.  Sounds good, but needs a little more low end.  I'm not looking to compete and I'd prefer quality over loudness.  I've been researching this over two months and I can't get my head around it.  The more I look the most rabbit holes I find.  I've looked at Alpine, Infinity, Fosgate, NVX, Sundown, Skar, DC, Dayton, SSA, Soundcubed, JL, Arc...everyone has good and bad to say about all those.  Most of those I can't hear locally so I'm hopeful y'all can get me going in the right direction.

Number of subs preferred: 1

Size preferred (if configuration allows): 12

Budget: $200 for the sub

Power to be used (which amp(s), include which resistance): I'll buy an amp at the same time that matches with the sub.

Space available (take measurements, do not guess): I have a trunk, the only restriction is 13.25" in height.  I want to build a sealed box.

Goals: I'd like to know it's there at low volume and would also like it to get after it when it's turned up.

Listening habits: I'm a drummer so I listen to everything.  Mostly rock, hard rock (double bass) and 80's.

Preferred brands/subs/whatever: I don't really care.

Ported boxes can sound as good as sealed boxes and they get louder too.

Sealed boxes in general are huge bottlenecks and severely restrict bandwidth and overall spl. Ported boxes are easier than you think, if you can assemble 6 or 7 pieces of wood to form a box then you can build a ported box.

The reason I'm saying this is because sealed boxes naturally roll off around 50hz, which is when a vehicle's transfer function (cabin gain) begins to increase, so a sealed box naturally rolls off too early. Most of the music you listed will have the highest concentration of bass in the 40-65hz region so you want a box that will perform well in that area.

If you want to save space then consider a 10. You'd be surprised what a quality 10 on a good 1k amp will do.

Part of the sealed is space.  I've also read that sealed is tighter.  I've also considered a 10 but am worried I'll lose the rumble.  I have a 12" in my home and it rumbles at low but shakes the roof when it's going.  Maybe it's apples and oranges.  I had a 10" in an extra cab truck years ago, it sounded great.  I appreciate the info and I'll look more into it.  As for the question at hand, do you have a preference regarding manufacturers?  Much thanks!

I love hearing that same old statement, I've heard that thousands of times.

Is it really true?
What's that mean anyway tighter? 40 hz is 40 cycles no matter what box it's in. Or is it how tight the sub fits in the box. Or smaller sealed box will fit in tighter places. Idk.

Yeah I get tired of hearing that too. I blame it on prefab...

SD3 is made for sealed. If you go there wait for the new SD4.

I would do a 12. A 10 will likely leave you wanting more especially for rock.

JL for $200? Maybe a W1 on sale good for only 300 watts. Meh
