ED 15AE Aluminum Cone Observations

I just got my new 15A Aluminum in the mail today //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm pumped. It got here fast as I don't know what.

I'm wonderin' about a couple things though:

1) It has a pretty small surround. Good for cone area, but I've seen many subs with twice it's surround, with only half it's xmax. I just gotta see if it can really move an 1" each way.

2) In the beginning with the flat cones, ED was boasting about how their flat cone design eliminated the potential for tinsel-slap, commonly attributed to concave cone designs, but yet they end up using a concave cone design. What gives?

3) They send you a big-ass flyer with Danger/Warning in big words with some guidelines to follow.

One of them being, A WEEK break-in time, MINIMUM!

WTH? That's kinda vague isn't it?

What if I play my sub for only 30 minutes a day, and someone else plays theirs for 2 hours a day? Am I STILL at risk for messing up my sub AFTER a week?

Basically, I'm just interested in how everything has worked out, IF everything has worked out, with any owners of the 15A Aluminum subs.

I can't wait to get it hooked up!

Though I feel kinda bad cheating on Crystal //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

O well, hehehe //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Right. There wouldn't have been any slap anyway because the tinsel leads were woven in with the spider.

They switched cone designs because they had problems with the flat cones... I think quite of a few of their subs had detached voice coil formers, though I'll note that my memory has been quite poor, lately.

The surrounds are pretty much what my flatones have right now, I think. Yeah, they move a whole lot. No dimpling either.

TInsel leads, woven, flat or concave, don't matter, like what someone said be4.

break-in period, I think it's an average of about 30 mins to an hour's play. It's impossible to tell you what length, unless Ben says"

"Play a 42.8Hz tone for 5 hours, 23 minutes and 6 seconds at 600w RMS to properly break in." Use your head, play gently for some time, then slowly trun it up.

What I usually do to break a sub in is set my music on a mid/low volume and leter run for a few hours. lather. rinse. reapeat 4 times.

this is the 15AE, you should have no problem with breaking it. it doesnt have the same joint that the flatcones did. the problems were flat coned based.

Good, Thanx //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Does the aluminum cone add or take away from the sound quality of the flat cone design?

It's kinda difficult to believe it will sound EXACTLY the same, ya know.

i just ordered the 15A AE so I should get it in a couple days,I will be comparing it too my 15 XXX.hopefully the 15a will be a little more efficient than my XXX

Mine is VERY efficient. It's in a 3.3-3.4 cubic feet vented box tuned @24hz (see my sig). I have to watch my gain while "breaking it in". It should POUND when it's broken in and I start to push it hard. It's already loud now at low power. But I guess that's to be expected bcuz of the size of the box it's in.

I'm impressed with the sound quality so far. Very crisp. I'll see how it keeps it's composure at high volume after it's broken-in. Then I can TRULY compare it to my Crystal COMPx2 15".....

There isn't much of a comparison //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

definatly, when i push it 60mm p2p in my wall, it can be painfull if you turn your head the wrong way //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wave.gif.002382ce7d7c19757ab945cc69819de1.gif

Are we dropping octaves below tuning to get that? Because we aren't doing that anywhere near tuning //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
