Acrylic is very strong, especially in 1" thickness.
We use 1/4" acrylic for some displays here at my work, supported (hanging) by just two 3" acrylic "arms".
I've actually tested it before, and just one of them held a 12" L7 and a couple thick books, before it broke.
So, yes 1" acrylic would be very strong. Especially if the "foundation" is strong.

i priced half inch plexi at a local distributor at $400+ per sheet....

a full sheet is almost always expensive. It's not cheap to make thick plexi sheets.
