this was posted on another forum, by a member who claims he's an installer lol, the topic was how to tune an amp:

im an audio installer,

-this is for any base amp

-first turn ur radio all the way down

-then make sure ur amp is on low-pass this is usually recognized as LP or LPF on the amp.

-then turn ur gain and bass boost all the way down

-if ur amp has subsonic turn it down

-if it has phase keep it at 0

-make sure all wires are properly connected and none are touching

-then crank ur sterio ONLY as loud as u listen to it

-turn bass boost to max

-slowly adjust the gain on the amp until the speaker stops getting louder bass (IF YOU KEEP TURNING THE GAIN UP PASS THE MAXIMUM VOLUME OF THE SPEAKERS YOU WILL BURN THEM UP)

its just an educated guess, but i'm going to say turn bass boost to max //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

FWIW, bass (as in sound) is "ss". base (as in free-base coke) is "se"

Op needs to get him to post in here. Remember, he's an installer, so we most be doing it all wrong.
yea im tryin to do that, im also tryin to get him to justify his response. Cause he's suppose to be an "Electronic Engineer" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif Not all installers are tuners. Hence why I have never asked installers for tuning advice. Mainly because most of the time I get answers like the op //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Electronic Engineer =/= CA installer

So? An electrical engineer is supposed to have understanding of complex electrical circuits, and a basic understanding of sound waves and sound signals, since a lot of what electronics works off of is signals. He should understand that bass boost boosts one frequency, and isn't conducive to proper powering.

He's not a sound engineer, so I don't expect him to understand that "turning it up until it doesn't get louder" isn't the proper way to set anything-- oh wait, that's common sense.

I too use installers for work Im too lazy for then change all their final settings myself. Been to Best Buy, CC, a couple different high end audio shops where they supposedly know better and have never been satisfied with anybody's settings. I know these things are different for everybody but I find the problem is alot of shops don't make the customer part of the tuning process and ask for specifics of any gaps they hear and then make adjustments from there. Nor do they ask whether the customer wants the most output they can get with no boost or whether they prefer to make use of bass and treble boosts, loudness, and other artificial sound enhancers before setting gain. I don't even remember ever having been asked what type of music I listen to. One shop low passed my front comps at just south of 40 HZ and then when I went back and complained about the dirty, sloppy booming bass in my blues music that was caused by the sub and the mids playing the same frequencies they told me I needed to upgrade to a 'better' 700 dollar mono amp to fix it. On another sub amp install someone jacked up the amp's bass boost on the sub amp but cut the sub volume at the head unit. The shop that took out my front bench seat to get to my 4 channel to bridge it for me didn't even set the gains anywhere close to equal on the bridged front and rear channels.

Tuning requires the least amount of hard labor out of any of it, better to just learn to do it for yourself. I have to wonder how much money's been wasted when people change things out for sound improvements that could have been achieved with just a few simple adjustments.

I had two of the Xtreme 12's and they were dual 4ohm. They read at like 3.5ohm per voice coil which is common.
