Someone asked me the other day to post some good pics of me reconing a sub, so when I had to do my RD Audio Elite SPL for my girlfriend, it seemed a great time to snap some pics for the people whom have been interested in doing this themselves one day soon on their own driver.

Materials for use in recone -

Drill with Phillips head bit

Soldiering iron with soilder

Bob Smith IC-2000 Tough Black Rubberized CA Glue - http://www.bsiadhesives.com/Pages/hobby/ca.html

Bottle of Acetone

Bottle of Aircraft Paint Stripper Gel

Index cards bought at walmart

Recone kit of your choice

I didnt take any pictures of the really nasty part of the recone - stripping the sub.. This would of been just removing the old CA glue off of the basket. All I did to do this was buy some Aircraft paint stripper gel at Walmart and painted the chemical over the old crusty surround leftovers and let it sit overnight. In the morning, most of the material had bubbled up and a small metal wire brush was just used to abrasively clean off the black goo residue. I did NOT scrape, beat, or gouge the basket with a screwdriver or metal brush in order to get any of the material off. After stripper has been applied and let sit, the removal shouldnt be that hard to mechanically remove.

After you're done stripping the sub, clean off the surround and spider landings on the basket with Acetone to leave it as paint stripper and oil free as possible. You could probably skip that step, but for the amount of money and time you have invested in doing this, its worth a bottle of $4 acetone at Walmart - Right?

Here is the driver after its been cleaned and seperated from the motor.

The motor top plate should be clean and clear of all debris for a perfect fit onto the basket assembly.

S7300192.jpg

Apply a bead of CA glue to the bottom of the basket

S7300193.jpg

Before the glue dries, attach the basket with the required screws. Do not overtighten, but make them a snug fit.

S7300194.jpg

First, lets make the voice coil shims fit before we glue anything. As you can see, I am using three index cards I just bought at walmart.

S7300198.jpg

S7300199.jpg

Next, we should apply glue to the dual spiders.

S7300200.jpg

S7300201.jpg

S7300202.jpg

Now lets put glue on the spider landing.

S7300203.jpg

S7300204.jpg

Then insert our shims inside the voice coil former

S7300205.jpg

Now its looking great!

S7300206.jpg

Next we’ll need some way to hold down weight evenly around the coil and spider. I found some odd shaped tupperwear from like 1970 for this, but as long as you get the general idea of how to disperse the weight evenly, you can use whatever you want.

S7300207.jpg

Next I put a 35 lb Oz Audio Matrix 15 motor on the coil assembly so we can leave it to dry.

nice dan //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif but you didnt show how to clean the gap. Especially for those with older woofer motors. Great so far //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Since on this particular recone kit the spider ring was missing. The spider ring is just a plastic piece that surrounds the outside of the spider and you put 10 screws in it to hold it down to the basket. Since I don’t have that, I’ll just make a nice bead of CA glue around where this ring is supposed to go.

S7300210.jpg

Now we solider on the tinsel leads.

S7300212.jpg

Now we put on the cone, and try to make it as level with the coil former as possible. This usually is pretty easy to do since the surround on the outside of the cone center’s it anyways.

S7300213.jpg

Let’s apply CA glue to the former / cone junction.

I didn’t take a picture of this for some dumb reason, but all I did is a liberal amount of CA glue bead around the basket where the surround landing is. And I put some weight on the cone while it dried. I choose to do this like this, but there is no right or wrong way as long as you put some weight or pressure on it. My girlfriend slapped me for using her popcorn bowl as my “weight dispersion device” //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif You’re really supposed to use the rubber ring that goes around the outside of the basket rim but I didn’t have one handy so I had to order one. You’ll see it put on the woofer below here after I called Nick at FI and begged him for an extra one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

This was initial testing and break-in for the sub, I just let it play on some regular radio station music for an hour to loosen it up a bit.

S7300219.jpg

I got a new RD logo dust cap in, and slapped it on with some more CA glue. Then it was off to install it in my girlfriend’s Durango SPL setup.

I haven’t had a chance to put it on the meter yet, but it sounds great!

Hope this post compels some people to recone their own drivers….. good luck!

I didnt post how to clean out the driver pole peice, because I sort of thought that was a no-brainer. If you're reconing a driver, it should be very clean before you put in your nice new expensive soft parts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

thanks for the positive replies, hope this helps some people out.

Do you put anything on the basket screws to keep them from vibrating lose? I always see a small amount of CA glue on the screws from the factory to keep it from coming lose. . . .

when you bolt on the basket to the motor the ca glue invariably always seems to get in there anyhow. I think the factory does it like I do, just let it sit where it gets when it's actually screwed on.

nice dan:) for a noob;) sell me that oz:)
i'll noob you fool //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/spank.gif.0d78e34d42ea8780359e903aeb6697d6.gif

The oz's arent even worth reconing IMO.... you can ship em back to the factory and for $120 you get an entire new sub from them. Hell ive even been told all you have to do is ship the soft parts back to OZ and they'll send you a new sub for $120. Havent tried that one though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/sneaky.gif.7189749b3a3f769e8815b47e8ae87f88.gif
