It seems like all the boxes I hear about on these forums are at least 2.5 ft^3. I have a box that is 2.71ft^3 gross and the most common comment I get is how big the box is. It may just be the fact that the depth is greater the width that makes it look big. But I was surprised that even the owner of the shop I go to commented on how big the box was.

Well ... it depends 100% on the sub you are using, the application, and the size of the woofer.

What sub are you using, ported? sealed? 8", 10", 12, 15, 18" ??

My sub is a 12 in a ported box tuned to 32 hz. Its an SE. My whole point really was it seems like people build these huge boxes, but what I thought was a small box gets a lot of comments about how big it is.

Try the sealed then. If you feel you're lacking low end extension you might try to build a ported box to give you a little more output down low.
