Most people prefer the "sound" of a paper cone. And nothing wrong with using a foam surround if it gives you the performance you need.

 

Plus, you gotta realize; he's trying to make something that competes with the best of the best for low budget pricing. If you look at the data comparisons between the proto and Excel's (a "reference" speaker to most home audiophiles), it doesn't do a half bad job.
