No, if the fuse was blown or pulled you would loose the display. Its still going to track the mileage in the ecu, just the display wont show it. If its an electrical display that is.

The engine control unit counts all of the pulses and keeps track of the overall distance traveled by the car. This means that if someone tries to "roll back" the odometer, the value stored in the ECU will disagree. This value can be read using a diagnostic computer, which all car-dealership service departments have.

might be your speed sensor. same thing happened to me and it turned out to be the vehicle speed sensor

According to the info I read on how stuff works the older style mechanical odometers could actually be rolled back if you drove in reverse, just like in Ferris Buellers Day Off (sp?)

Its just weird since Ive driven practically the same exact car for the 2 years pror to picking this up, and this has right around the same mileage, and hasnt been driven nearly has hard as my last car.

i had a 94 crown vic that the odometer worked off and on. if i set the trip i noticed it would add miles but rarely, took months of heavy driving to put hundreds of miles on it. i drove it for 2 years and gave it to my mom and shes been driving it for at least 2 years and its racked up less than 5k. wait and see if it eventually adds miles.
