Why is it that when we get into which sub is better............

That as soon as the JL Audio 13W7 is brought into play that everyone starts hollerin about prices? How about this, say that all subs are free. What sub would you take?

I personally have 2 of the 13W7's and before I dropped the dough I checked out just about every other brand manufacturer and everything i could. And everyone said the same thing that is done here. As soon as the W7 is mentioned they mention price instead. So as I said above, if all subs were free what would you take? And please explain as to why? I am just curious to here you guys responses,

I'd get what I have. 2 re8s.

The reason is they have a mounting depth of less than 4'' and all I had was 5''. So as far getting any sub I wanted, IMO their is no better 8'' sub with a mounting depth less than 4'' that has 12mm xmax and moves that much air.

For me it came down to the best sub that fit in my set up.

before I got my mag I would have to say the W7, but now I have my Mag and have got to play around with it for a month now it would be a serious toss up between the two. A flip of the coin. I love my Mag.

I would wait for IA to get the 18" DP out and get that. Or even what I am getting now, the 15 either way it would be a DP.

But, I'll give it a shot...

Since I know that will never happen, how bout look at it this way...

All subs were not free, but money was not really an object...

I currently have 3 JL 12W6s... I want to move on to something bigger and better... Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissin the JLs, they sound great, just don't have enough output... When I build this system, I thought all I wanted was SQ, I thought I was done with SPL... I was bad wrong!!!!!!!

Since I do a lot of car shows I decided I wanted to do something a little SIC on the audio system. Something, that would make me say WOW, each time I checked it out...

I'm not loaded or anything, but I save well and had been saving for several months to do some stuff to the truck. So, I budgeted 2K or under just for subs...

So, While looking at subs I considered a lot of things such as:

Watts - RMS and peak (wated something that would handle atleast 1000 easy)

Space needed (wasn't worried as I have an SUV, but in retrospect, they too fill up fast)

V.C. Config (wanted Dual 2 OHM, to get a 1 Ohm)

Cone style (Open, but kinda wanted an inverted cone with a medium surround)

Brand Reputation (obviously wanted something not known to be junk)

Customer service (wanted a company, that seem like they we interested in this as a sport to, not just a job, as well as good customer service, I placed several calls and e-mails to each)

Visual appearance (wanted a nice look of cone and magnet, but not super important)

Gut instinct (been doing stere systems for years, I usually have fairly accurate gut instincts)

Again Cost per sub was not a major factor...

Some of the subs I looked at were:

JL W7 (Tons of local dealers, heard atleast 10 systems, some vented, some sealed. They went really loud, but I did not like the sound)

ID IDMAX (several local dealers, sounded really really good, and got really loud)

Adire (sounded really really good, and got really loud)

S.I. (Never heard any, but read alot on them)

D.D. (heard several systems, They went really loud, but I did not like the sound)

E.D. (Never heard any, but read alot on them, Peeps from E.D. seemed real cool, didn't like the design or looks)

R.E. (heard one set at an SPL comp from an outta town guy and loved them, read everythig I could on as many forums and sites as I could find, called and talked to RE, got great service each time, loved the look, design, specs and all)

TREOenginering (loved the looks, design, specs, could not find any local dealers or online dealers)

To narrow it down, my 3 final choices were

1. Treo

2. I.D.

3. R.E.

4. Adire

Since I could not find a place to buy the Treos, they were out...

REs seem to be louder and built better than the IDs, so.......

So long story short, I dropped 2K on 6 Subs... (yet to get used //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif damit )

Not everyone bases their opinion on cost...

If I had all the money in the world and money was no object, I would probably go with a pair of 15XXX's.

The reason why I wouldn't go with a 13W7 is because everybody knows they can get loud. If I made an awesome dual enclosure for 2 of them custom ported and everything and then I show my friends, they would be all like "It is a W7, they will sound good with anything". However, If I roll up with an unknown woofer like a 15XXX, put that in a ported box, my friends would be like "holy ****, that sounds awesome".

Some People need to open there eyes and kill the myth that the W7 is at the top of the subwoofer pyramid. With a kilerl "internet company" instal, I can somewhat kill the ignorance that 13W7 is the god of all subwoofers around here.

Well now hang on a second, I never said that the JL Audio Subs were on top of the pyramid. I have heard the Treo Engineering subs that Smullen talked about. I have heard 4 of there 12's in a ported box with probably 2-2.5 cubes per 12. And one 13W7 in a ported box sounded better then all 4 12's. That is when I started digging up info on these subs.

My godfather owns a car stereo shop that deals with: JL Audio, Kicker, Alpine, Cerwin Vega, Planet Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Memphis Audio, Clarion, JVC, Chronic Audio, MB Quartz, Kenwood, Pioneer,Earthquake,Zapco, Cadence,Phoenix Gold, Q-Logic, Probox, Sony, Panasonic, Kove, and some others but i cant remember right now.

But I have had a chance to hear lots of different high end subwoofers. I have never heard the RE's , XXX's, ID's , H2's or D2's or some of the other companies that are Internet company's. But I have heard the Cerwin Vega strokers. 2 of the 15's against the 13w7's and the 13w7's in my opinion just sound all around better to me. I have heard the Memphis audio 12 inch elvis series as well and again I just like the way the JL Audio sounds. So I didnt get them based on hype I got them because to me they just sounded better.

Well, then it doesn't matter what anyone says... If you want to run them and think they sound better, then I'd say by all means run them...

There is no one sub that Everyone is going to agree on, no matter how bad ass....

Very true!

That last statement should be a sticky. I'm all for trying to compare subs, but sometimes people just get wraped up in the sub they are running and according to them all other brands are just sh**. It's very simple, if you have not heard them or have experiance with them do not voice your opinion about them, and that goes for good or bad. And if you have heard them just remember that they are the best or not to you only and your ears only. Be opened mined that you proberly will not have "the best", but what you have is the best for you.
