It takes quite a bit of time to properly design and construct one...not really worth the time.

to break it down mr. potato head style, its a type of box that has the subs completely enclosed, allowing pressure to escape only through ports, usualy resulting in more SPL and less transient response. A properly designed 4th or 6th order can give good SPL gains while sacrificing very little SQ, but they are very hard to tune correctly. 8th order and higher are just plain silly.

here is an example of a well built bandpass box, this one is 6th order housing 4 8s mounted isobarically. Built by Geolemon, he linked to it in a thread a while ago. Prettiest box I've ever seen, hands down.

Thanks guys. That cleared things up a lot. After reviewing the info I think if I ever built a box I'd buy a tube, stick it in there, and call it a day. That box Geolemon is awesome! Question though, what would you do if one of the speakers broke? Would you have to take the whole box apart? That would ****!
