what setting to use on this dmm to set gain

Fluke makes great DMMs. We use the 117 on subs which is basically just an upgraded version of yours. Solid and accurate. And what's your HU? 80% of max to be safe but you need an oscope to know for sure

My mids and highs amp is set to my liking and havent heard distortion untikl the 34/35 mark and thats usually too loud to listen to any ways. I feel like if I keep my volume at about 28-30/35 and pull all my speaker wires on my m&h amp and sub amp, and adjust gain to 40 = (sqrt.(400*4)). and a 40hz sine at 0-db. with my eq flat ill be good. also another noob question is if I cant reach 40v with everything flat do I turn my sub level up to give my amp more

When you're setting with a DMM, your sub level should be at its highest anyway. You're setting the absolute max at your calculated voltage to avoid needing to do this later.

oh ok so on my hu I need to turn my sub level to max (+15) when tuning to max voltage? I have a gain remote should I position it half way to have the option for more and less gain or during this process have it all the way up

Don't know about the gain knob as I don't use them, but yes, you want the sub level at max when tuning to max voltage. I wouldn't use the bass remote while tuning and add it later, but don't know the protocol on those.

what the interface looks like

No Bass EQ settings run, just Sub Level at max and HU volume at max unclipped. Phase should be 0 degrees
Forgive the noob, could you elborate on phase. lol and btw thanks man, throughout my whole build you have been extremely helpful.

I appreciate it. I do try to stay as patient as possible. Basically, you don't want to be running any EQ on your HU when setting your gains. That means bass boost, bass level, system q, all that noise should either be off or at 0 with the only things that are elevated more than normal are the Sub Level and the HU's volume itself.

Make sure you have a test tone ready. I prefer to use 0dB tones with 50Hz for my subs and 1KHz for my comps. Some people suggest -5 so it's all personal preference. Any google search will net you these tones. Play the appropriate test tone at the max unclipped volume for your HU and raise the gain on your amp to your calculated number.

And presto. Now you can set everything the way you want it on the HU and not have to worry about touching the amp itself.
