Weird computer problem

My mom started up her computer this morning, and it loads windows, but as soon as the desktop shows up, the screen either goes black, or the computer restarts. This is a new monitor (3months old) and never had this problem before. What could it be?

I am thinking a possible virus? It seems that it waits for a connection before it restarts or goes black. Anyone had this problem before?

After posting, went back in there and some how it exited itself from the system Bios and was at the desktop. But it was frozen. So restarted again, and it has been working properly so far.

Weird???

I had a similiar problem. XP would restart once it loaded. Thought it was a virus on the HD, so replaced that. After about a month of messing with programs, startup items, etc. it turned out to be my 56K modem that got corrupted and was stopping, causing my computer to restart forever.

Doubt that's your problem but just throwing that out there. Also, I got rid of Norton since then and no problems.

I think a nice reinstall would be a fast and easy fix. Dont format it, because you can lose it all. But not being able to see exactly what it does is a problem. To me it sounds like that virus that hit a long as time ago, it put its self in the registry and caused the computer to restart everytime that the computer turned on. If you could get into the registry and edit it that would prolly fix it.

But of course thats gonna be hard.

I would just reinstall over it.

Are you overclocking?

Recently install new RAM?

Go into the BIOS & do a 'load defaults'.

Remove all hardware & peripherals except video (if not onboard), monitor, and keyboard & see what happens.

I went to start it up this morning, it started up, but it froze on the desktop. So I restarted it, and the screen is black. The monitor doesn't even come on, the little power light flashes like it is not getting any signal from the computer.

Possible PSU or MOBO problem?

PS: It beeps over and over again every now and then
