Up-Conversion HD-DVD Player

Well as you guys know if you saw the thread. I purchased a 50" Samsung DLP HLS5087W 1080P for the downstairs living room. I'm looking to purchase a up-conversion dvd player. As much as I would like a real HD-DVD player like the Toshiba HD-A1. I just can't afford it. I was looking at these two and was wondering if anybody has any experience with them

Oppo DV-981HD and the Samsung HD-960. Both are suppose to be 1080p upconversion. Anybody have any thoughts?

I meant up-conversion dvd player, not hd-dvd player.

I have a Samsung because it did upconversions over analog via a 'remote hack'

so I can get 1080i over my component video, the PQ is improved. This is an

illegal operation as upconversions are done via digital output. You can probably

get good results via digital for either of those, but alot of people do have a boner

for the Oppo brand so I would look more into this. Check this forum for more

info. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/index.php?

I look on avsforum sometimes. I absolute hate looking/reading on that forum because of how unorganized everything is, and the ten million pages each section has. Someone suggested me to get the oppo dv-970 over the oppo dv-981 because of enhance macroblocking issue, i'm not even sure what this means. But I want a 1080p upconversion dvd player not a 1080i.

I believe its on DLP/Plasmas. Which I own a DLP. Dangit
lol it affects ALL tvs lol

its source related not your tv unless you got some real crappy tv lol

but think about it man. if it was your tv would they recommend a better dvd player? no cause its your tv LOL

but since it isnt they recommended a better dvd player. stop playing around and just get an hd-dvd player theirs no microblocking at all...and its probably $150 more then the oppo and does and awesome job in upconverting dvds

the reason i didn't get an HD player was the cost, and who knows what is going to happen with Blu-ray and HD. i just wanted to find something that would look good with my current DVDs and not break the bank. so i got the oppo. plus, i think the 981 looks really nice (physically and display).

The cost is my main problem also. I want something for the downstairs living room. Same about blu-ray and hd-dvd. I plan on getting a real hd-dvd player once I get a tv for my room. But I need something that would look good with standard dvd's that doesn't cost as much as a hd-dvd player.

Get the Oppo....

For the money I don't think you could go wrong.

I've been thinking about picking one up to compare it to my Pioneer, since it doesn't upconvert and I have that Pioneer Elite Plasma just begging for an upconverted signal....

my pops has the lg upconverting player that was $90 at best buy, and it works fine

there's definietly a large improvement when upconverting with the player vs. allowing the tv to scale the image itself

Indeed there is....

When I got my TV I had it hooked up at my parents place. My dad has a Arcam DVD player which will upconvert to 1080i and it was insane the difference between 480p to 1080i or 720p. I figured I would maybe see a little difference but everything was much clearer and more real. AMAZING!

Ah, being that you have all those high end equipments I figured you yourself would have a hd-dvd player or a blu-ray dvd player of some sort. I think I may go with the Oppo 1080i over the Oppo 1080p version. I hear about the 1080P version having a lo to enhanced macroblocking problems.
