Two Head Units Attempted,1 Survives

I installed a cassette player into my system sharing speaker connections with a Swiss Audio CD unit. With both units powered up, the Swiss Audio stopped producing sound. I assume the cassette player's signal destroyed something in the more sensitive speaker output of the CD player. Should I have used diodes on the speaker wires and dealt with the voltage drop? Can the CD player be fixed or is it a paper weight?
