I installed some infinity kappa 63.5i three-ways in my friends dodge dakota. They were previously in mine and I had no problem with the high note distortion. After i installed them they were working fine and sounded great. He has an alpine deck. I turned down the bass level and turned up the treble +2 and turned the volume up. As i turned it up the speakers remained the same loudness and started to distort. I then restarted the car and turned all settings back to normal. The speakers still distort but only on the high notes. Could the tweeters be damaged? bad wiring? Please help thanks.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Tweeters could be damaged, headunit could be distorting, too many things to list here...

Try taking them out and putting them back into your car. If they dont distort you know that there is a problem in his truck.

yeah, im going to wait until the weekend to re-check the wiring. I think he might have bad grounds. Also, he just told me that when he accels his speakers wine. This is from the alternator, right?

The point of the volume is to allow you to reach the verge of distortion and then back off so that your speakers are properly powered by an unclipped signal. If the speakers are distorting....turn the volume down

Yeah, they are amped from a kenwood excelon four channel. I don't know the model though. I just haven't had time to take a look at it, the guy is always busy. I will turn down the gains and re-ground amp and head unit.

i turned down gains and regrounded amps. gains are at around 1v, his head unit is alpine and they are 4v preouts everything from the head unit to the speakers are wired correctly. ground helped the sound a little bit but i dont think they were the problem. He has a pair of really low quality loolking rcas, could this be it? again, when volume is turned up only the high notes will crack and distort. Please help.

so i switched in a different speaker and it also distorted at high notes. also all of his speakers distort on the high notes. So does this mean that his head unit is distorting? or could his amp be distorting? what should the gains be set at? around 1.3 right?
