Title: Subwoofer & Amplifier Cheat Sheet – Quick Reference for Wiring & Setup

Subwoofer & Amplifier Cheat Sheet — Plus What's Coming Next

If you're trying to figure out subwoofer impedance, series/parallel wiring, or what RMS amplifier power matches your subs, I put together a simple reference guide covering the basics in one place.

It includes:

  • Series and parallel wiring
  • Common subwoofer impedance configurations
  • How final ohm loads are calculated
  • RMS power and amplifier matching
  • Quick wiring references to make setup easier

The SUBWOOFER & AMPLIFIER CHEAT SHEET is available for $10 here:

I'm also working on my next project: a Subwoofer Box Build Cheat Sheet.

The box builds I'm planning will be unique designs, not just the same basic enclosure designs you see everywhere. I'm putting together information that will help with building and understanding subwoofer enclosures, and I'll be releasing the cheat sheet in the future.

If anybody has questions about subwoofer wiring or amplifier matching, feel free to ask. I'm happy to help.

MY CUSTOM DUAL-12" HIGH-OUTPUT BOX DESIGN 🔊🔥

I’ve been working on my own custom dual-12 enclosure design, built around deep low-end, high output, strong construction, and clean airflow.

This isn't a prefab box with a couple numbers changed. The idea behind this design is to get serious low-frequency performance while keeping the enclosure practical enough for a real vehicle.

🔥 THE DESIGN

External Dimensions:
36" W × 16" H × 22" D

Material:
3/4" Baltic Birch plywood

Front Baffle:
1.5" thick laminated baffle for extra rigidity

Configuration:
Dual 12" ported enclosure

Target Net Airspace:
Approximately 3.5–4.0 ft³ after accounting for the subs, port and bracing

Target Tuning:
32 Hz

Port:
Large center slot-port design

Port Area:
Approximately 56 in²

The large port is intentional. I'm designing this around moving a lot of air without making the port itself the limiting factor. Port area and port length have to work together to hit the intended tuning frequency, so the final port length will be matched to the actual net volume rather than just guessing at it.

🛠️ CONSTRUCTION

I'm using 3/4" Baltic Birch for the enclosure because I want a rigid cabinet without unnecessarily adding a ton of weight.

The front baffle gets doubled to 1.5".

I'll also be using substantial internal bracing tying the major panels together. The goal is to have the enclosure doing its job instead of wasting energy flexing the walls.

All joints will be glued and mechanically fastened, followed by sealing the internal seams.

🌪️ PORT DESIGN

The center slot port is one of the main features of the design.

I'm giving the port enough cross-sectional area to handle the output of two high-excursion 12s while keeping airflow under control.

The inside port transitions will be rounded over to help smooth the airflow and reduce turbulence.

No tiny prefab-style port stuffed into the box just to make the numbers fit.

🔊 SUB CUTOUTS

Dual 12" mounting locations with approximately 11.125" cutouts, depending on the actual subwoofer being used.

The final cutout should always be verified against the manufacturer's specifications before cutting. Not every "12-inch" sub uses the exact same mounting diameter.

💪 BUILD DETAILS

  • 3/4" Baltic Birch
  • Double-thickness front baffle
  • Heavy internal bracing
  • Large center slot port
  • Rounded port edges
  • Wood glue on every structural joint
  • Mechanical fasteners approximately every 4"
  • Internal silicone sealing after assembly
  • Recessed sub mounting if the installation calls for it
  • Heavy-duty terminal posts
  • Optional internal LED lighting
  • Textured automotive-style exterior finish

🎯 WHAT I'M GOING FOR

I'm not designing this box around being the smallest possible enclosure.

I'm going for that deep, nasty low-end while still having the output and airflow to let a pair of good 12s breathe.

The target is 32 Hz, so this is intended to get down into the low bass instead of being another box tuned way up in the 40 Hz range.

Obviously, the final results depend heavily on the actual subwoofer's T/S parameters, power, vehicle and electrical system. The enclosure should ultimately be matched to the specific drivers being used.

But this is the basic concept:

DUAL 12s + BIG PORT + RIGID CABINET + LOW TUNING = LET'S MAKE SOME AIR MOVE. 😂🔊

This is my custom design. I'm still refining the dimensions before cutting the first panel, and I'm interested in hearing what you guys would change or improve.

Constructive criticism is welcome. I'm here to build something badass, not pretend I know everything.

FREE DUAL-12 CUSTOM BOX DESIGN 🔊 — BUMP BUMP “L-FLOW”

I decided to give one of my custom dual-12 enclosure concepts away FREE to the CarAudio community.

This isn't a prefab design with a couple dimensions changed. I wanted to try something different with the port layout, so this one uses an offset L-shaped slot port.

🔥 BASIC SPECS

External Dimensions:
36"W × 16"H × 22"D

Material:
¾" plywood or MDF

Configuration:
Dual 12" ported

Target Net Volume:
Approximately 4.6 ft³ before the exact subwoofer/bracing displacement is accounted for

Target Tuning:
Approximately 32 Hz

Port:
4"W × 14.5"H

Port Area:
Approximately 58 in²

Port Length:
Approximately 27" centerline

🛠️ THE IDEA

The port starts at the front of the enclosure and travels toward the rear before making a 90-degree turn.

The L-shaped layout lets the port get the length it needs without making the enclosure ridiculously deep.

I'm also recommending a double-thickness front baffle and substantial internal bracing because two 12s moving serious air can put a lot of stress on the enclosure.

📐 IMPORTANT

This is a general-purpose dual-12 concept, not a universal "works perfectly with every 12-inch sub" design.

The actual subwoofer's displacement, T/S parameters, power level and vehicle will affect the final enclosure volume and tuning. Verify the manufacturer's specifications for the subs you're using before cutting.

I wanted to put something useful out here instead of just another sales pitch.

I'm giving this design away FREE.

If anybody builds it, I'd honestly like to see pictures and hear what you think.
