On January 25th 2004, Benfica traveled to Guimarães to play Vitória S.C.. The game was being transmitted live on television and Benfica lead 1-0. Feher received a yellow card in injury time when he suddenly grabbed his chest and fell to the ground. As the physicians realized that he had heart failure they performed immediate CPR on him, by which point the audience realized the gravity of the situation. An ambulance entered the field to take Feher. His condition was covered by the Portuguese throughout the day, and before midnight Feher's death was confirmed. The Public Prosecutor (the Portuguese agency responsible for the release of autopsy details) announced that Fehér died from cardiac arrhythmia brought on by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In memory of him, Benfica have retired the number 29 shirt which he wore during his time at the club. He was remembered by many and his death caused a profound shock in Portuguese sport.
