Mom needs help!! Son wants mega system, but can only afford less than 1000 installed. He wants kicker amp and jl subs plus head unit for Honda civic. Recommendations anyone?

That's going to be hard. What I did for my first system, I bought 2 JL 10w0's and put them in a bandpass box with a Phoenix Gold QX180.2 amp. It cost me $612.82 installed. It was all retail too. What I sugest, if he wants mega bass, is buy 2 10 or 12w3's from ebay or onlinecarstereo.com and put them in a ported box built for the sub. The amp should be somewhere around 200-250 watts RMS into 2 channels, or 400-500 wRMS mono. Get a basic headunit like the Pioneer DEH-1400. This setup installed should be around 900-1200.

Thats not very hard if you install it yourself. What I would tell you to do is ot go on ebay and buy two JL W3s and the appropriate amp. You can also find h/us cheap on there. If you have to sacrifice something on the list, then it should be the h/u. You don't have to have a great h/u to have a "mega" system. Good luck. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif :D //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

ive found 12w6 onthe internet for 198 and you should be able to find the amp at a reasonable price too. if you want to save a lot of money shop on the internet. thats where i found my stuff and i saved a lot of money. i got my subs for half price and the amp i found for a hundred dollars less than what chrutchfield was askin

Try Ebay deffintly. I'd also look @ crossfire for subs. they are ind of expesive but awsome bass. for amps, maybe PPI Rockford fosgate, or JL udio. Either way if ur gonna give him 1000 for his system in his civic ur one hella cool mom. I wish i was him.

ok let me wake you up

just get him a cd player and speakers

let him get the rest

or better yet, let the kid work for it

I'm 18 and I have a decent system in my school

but I also put a large portion of my money into mutual funds and such

get him a cd player and 4 speakers

get him a pioneer deh-1300 ($199 cDN, have alot of features msot $200 decks dont)

get him some RF or Kicker speakers

and put thje other $500 into a mutal fund for him and add to it every once in a while

ghe will get more enjoyment out of that longer than a stereo

Buy my old system, it pounds for the money and plays perfectly. I got laid off today (I'm 18 working at radioshack that closed down) so I need the money even more now heh.

I have a sony head unit - $179, 2 - 12" Bazookas $120 (circuit city has buy 1 get 1 free), in a sealed box, and 600 watt Kenwood amp$220. My system can be heard coming from 1/2 mile away, I can feel my ear drums vibrating. I've heard louder, but for a starter system something similiar would be good. I installed everything myself, but my advice to you is, let a professional install the cd player, and your son can install the rest, if he isn't sure how to hook up an amp, then I'm sure he has friends and can get help on the internet. You should have some money left over, for mids and hi's I would go with infinity. I have a pair of infinity 4's with a 900 hz bass blocker, and i have blown away a car with 6 pioneer mids hooked up to an amp. If you don't go with any of these, the best advice I can give is get a good sub, cheap no-name subs are nothing compared to MTX, Kicker, etc... good luck

Okay Mom...First off, Why does he want a mega-system? Why do you want to get him a mega-system?

Lots of guys want a system that they design for other people...peer pressure so they fit in...they look at the loud, pounding bass as some sort of teenage mating call.

If you son want to build a system for himself, then help educate him. Go to some local shops and LISTEN to a good system. A good system should sound well balanced and clear. Most mega-systems don't sound good at all, there is only Bass. Why people do this is beyond me. I understand the guys that do it for competition purposes...but most of those guys are spending in excess of $50 grand to be competitive on the nationwide circuits.

A good system should cosist of a decend head unit...which you can find local or internet for a couple hundred buck. Kenwood comes to mind, especially if you can find a closeout on an Excelon head unit. Ensure that the head unit has four-way power to drive his regular speakers.

For subs...stick with some JL Audio 10W0's, for the price they can't be beat (you'll probably find these for about $150 for the pair.) To run these subs...I know your son want the "Kicker" name on his amp...get him the Kenwood mono-block amp. You can find this for around $200. For regular speakers in the car, go local and listen to the different brands. Have the sales-dork play them with only deck power and listen to your SONs music, not what the sales-dork wants you to hear. I know this sounds expensive, but listen to the new Infinity ceramic speakers...they are probably gonna run you about $200 installed per pair, but they are worth it, and just run them with the deck power.

This will be a great entry-level system that will sound great, and has many components that will lead up to a better system if he ever wants to upgrade.

good luck...
