Speaker Static

I'm in a 87 Caviler, I put in a new head unit w/o replacing the speakers, now when ever the engine is running and I have some type of signal going to the speakers it makes an annoying static sound. Does this mean I have too much power going through the speakers? if not what is going on?

im not sure its the power youcould also have a bad ground. check that first
