something better than Type R (price/SQ)?

i'll have about 300-350 watts going to two 12" subs in an enclosed box. mainly looking for SQ but obviously want some SPL. or would it be wiser to put 600-700 watts into a single 12 using the $200 or so dollars that i would spend on the Type R's. i only want to go about $200 for the sub...i still have to get a cap!

my co-worker says that i wouldn't need a HO alt if i were to get the right size cap. i have a honda civic LX, MTX 4-channel amp (4 X 25) and an MTX1501D running at 4-ohms (running it at 2-ohms would surely require an HO alt). would this work without dimming the lights?

You can look at some Adire Audio Shiva Mk 4's they will do 650WRMS, they are dual 8 ohm coils though so two subs wired in parallel/paralell will give you a 2 ohm load. Nice subs shipped at $125 a piece. I did some modeling in WinISD on them and they appear to have a good response range. Once I get them I'll be able to tell for sure but I haven't heard anything bad about them.

First off if you are only giving each sub 150-175WRMS then that is your problem. The Type R's like around 400-600WRMS, they can get plenty loud. I would look into getting a bigger amp for them that will give each at least 400WRMS and then build a ported box for them if you are still not happy with it.

Stay away from ebay. Its the dumping ground for products and people get burned all the time. I either look at image dynamics or infinity perfects. These get loud and still have SQ. A cap is like a band-aid. If your alternator is way too small then they make it even harder on your alternator. They don't magically make your charging system produce a higher voltage. Do you see people at competitions with caps (or at least the ones that win anything)? I dont think so. You need a high output alternator.

i will actually have 300-350 watts going into each of the two subs, sorry if i misled anyone. anyway, i should be between 800-900 watts of amp power with both amps...is this going to be too much for a civic without getting an HO alt?

You won't know if it's enough or not till you install it all.

my recommendations for subs would be the eD 15Kv2. They are currently available as a pre-order, $100+shipping.

Civics usually do not have very powerful alternators, I don't know what year you have but I know most of them are usually in the 60-90 amp range. You might have the room to spare for that system but then again maybe not. If your looking at an aftermarket alt here are some places I just asked for quotes from: Mean Green, sales@darvex.com (Stinger Alt's), Excessive Amperage and one of the guys I heard about on this forum (don't have his name, check electrical section for alternators). HO is my option of last resort since I have heard they are expensive in comparison. However, when you compare the factory replacement alt for my Mazda 6 (list $388) then HO doesn't look so bad!
