So...

this quote i like

Hiking everyone's tax rate by 1 percentage point would yield an additional $480 billion over 10 years. By contrast, raising the top two tax rates by 1 percentage point would yield just $115 billion.

I would prefer that the tax code treat everyone equally. Once everyone caries their "fair share", then I believe the debate over the proper size and scope of government will change dramatically.

So long as ~half the country can pay no income taxes, demand others pay higher income taxes, and demand more government "programs", I don't think we, as a country, can have an honest debate. It's reall easy to demand government "action" when you expect others to pay for said action.

Okay, I am starting to like you. Please DON'T bring up a god damn STi in this thread.

But that is a pipe dream and you know it. Will never happen. Once you give someone something for free, you can never take it back.
lol.

Anyway, Cain's "9 9 9" is one possible way to get us there. I haven't looked that deep into it yet because I don't have to vote for a few months, but it *sounds promising on the equal treatment front.

I also question if there is enough time to allow for the changes that would come from everyone paying for the government. Math and time are not on our side.

The economists that I have spoken to say that Cain's theory produces less overall taxes than the current messed up structure, so it isn't really a solution to the problem. Sure, it would be nice to have everything fair, but that doesn't solve over spending - which is the really issue.
Not directly, no. That's why I mentioned time. (which I don't think we have enough of). Once everyone's paying the same rate(s), the debate over cuts vs tax increases will shift. (Because tax increases will no longer be for someone else)

I really want to hear OWS supporters defend their call for discrimination.

lol.

You really should look into it because you would be paying more in taxes. The 9% federal sales tax would be in addition to the state tax you already pay.

I stand with occupy Wall Street because it demands fiscal responsibility out of banks and large corporations who know how to work the system and pay little to no taxes, or have a have a negative tax due at the end of the year. I applaud people who work in excess of 40 hours per week, but people should not need to work 60 hours just to make ends meet. A 40-hour work week should be more than enough to raise a family on; that's how it was in the 50's and early 60's. Now you need a two family income of 40+ hours to make ends meet and you still live paycheck to paycheck. The standard of living for the middle class has decreased while the large corporations prosper. That's what the movement is about. You see hippies who are lazy, but that's because that's what the media shows you. They do not show you the hard working American's out there, the retired military veterans, or the rich people who stand with OWS and feel they should be taxed more because they can afford it. Before judging why don't you check it out. I have not been able to camp out because there is no movements close to me, but if I lived in a bigger area, I would be there ever chance I got.

You don't even know what bracket I'm in now. Besides, it's not really my tax rate you are concerned with is it?

It's your tax rate you are worried about isn't it? The thought of actually paying your real fair share is not something you want to do. You want to be able to (continue to) force others to pay a higher tax rate than you. Let others carry a disproportionate burden.

If you actually believe that stuff, you should fight to remove the government's power to create "loopholes". If the government only had the power to set "a" tax rate for everyone, this problem would be gone.

But then you would have to pay the same rate as everyone else. Which could very well end up being more than you pay now.

Says who? If we are all grown men and women, (and free) our pay and working conditions are selected from options presented by others who offer to pay us for our skills. Or, if no one offers to give you what you seek, start your own business and try to persuade other free people to give you money for your goods and/or services directly.

Some of the best advice my grandfather ever gave me when I was young was "Nobody owes you shit. The sooner you learn that, the better your life will be."

He was so right. No one owes you a 40 hour work week.

Now you need a two family income of 40+ hours to make ends meet and you still live paycheck to paycheck. The standard of living for the middle class has decreased while the large corporations prosper.
BS. I grew up in a trailer, across the cow pasture from my (other) grandfather's chicken farm.

While I am by no means rich, my standard of living has greatly improved. Just one of my cars cost more than the trailer I once lived in.

My parent's couldn't afford college, but the Marine Corps was more than happy to help me with that, in exchange for 5 years of my life. It wasn't as easy as other choices I could have made, but I thought everything they offered was worth it.

I see people demanding discrimination. And you have not refuted that image.
