Should I get 18 XXX?

Well.. I've been really debating lately on what I want to get. I have changed my mind about 2352 times in the past week.

The main thing i want is more SQ than SPL, and from what I've read the XXX are a good sq sub, however, still do well in SPL as well.

Only problem is I have never 'heard' an XXX. Basically just from reading forums and what not. So I'm kinda skeptical about getting one and not being pleased with it.

What are everyones opinions on this sub? Pros/Cons?

Thanks

Yeah, Kind of worded that wrong. I want more SQ than SPL, but i would love for it to be loud and still clear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

as far as your decisson goes. no matter what an 18 isnt going to achieve the sq of a 12. but a 12 wont achieve the spl of an 18. i havent heard the xxx yet, but my local shop that co sponsor's me is doing a xxx install and so i'll give you my opinion if your interested. i'm currently running pbx 15's and have used jl, infinity and memphis in the past. (as well as audiobahn.. heheheh not proud)

I appreciate the replys. Guess that's what I'll get... SHould i get the standard 2 ohm? or upgrade to the quad 1.4 or Dual .7?...and since im a newb..what kinda amp would run the 1.4/dual.7?

Depends on what you want. Get the regular dual 2 if you want to run it at either .5 ohms or 2 ohms. I'm not sure what it will run at with those quad. configurations, somebody else will know though. If one of those quad. options allows you to run it at 1ohm then that may be your best choice, depending upon amplifier. For example, with a dual 2ohm setup, a JBL 1200.1 would put out more power than a Hifonics Brutus BX1500D. But if you can get it to run at 1ohm, the Brutus would have 200-300 watts over the JBL.

*EDIT - what I said is true, but not for 1 sub, for 2.

isnt dual 2 a 1 ohm load? i know dual 4 is a 2 ohm....atleast thats what ive been thinking forever.
You've been thinking right forever...

For some reason I was thinking of 2 subs instead of 1 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif

Why wont an 18 have the SQ of a 12? I assume you mean the 12 will sound better...? The 18 will play lower, with more authority. This is bad for SQ?

Smaller subs having better SQ is a popular misconception, partially sustained by the fact that SQ competitors tend to use smaller subs in their SQ installs. However, most SQ judging is done at (relatively) low volume levels, where lots of cone area isn't necessary. Also, its easier to blend 10's or 12's in with midbass or midrange drivers, another reason many SQ competitors use smaller subs. BUT, tat in no way means 18's have less SQ, just more output.

A sub with sufficient motor strength to control the increase in cone weight of an 18 over smaller sizes will have no trouble playing just as 'clean' as a smaller cone. I assure you, a XXX has enough motor strength. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
