BUCK FAMA

Just copying and pasting the story from a hunting forum I post on.

Decided to hunt a spot yesterday evening where I killed my first doe this year. Went further back in than I normally do trying to find some fresh buck sign. Came across a fresh scrape and 2 rubs. There were some acorns dropping so i decided to just climb there. I hadn't seen a deer and decided to grunt at about 5:15 before I climbed down. It hadn't been 15 seconds after I grunted that I heard this dude come running. He came in full speed and locked up about 50 yards out. I knew it was a buck but couldnt tell how big.I was beginning to wonder if he would come closer. Finally he goes on a dead stiff-legged walk to the scrape. I had just put some dominant buck pee in the scrape, and this dude went haywire when he smelled it. He pawed it, racked his antlers in the limbs, and nailed the licking branch. Having only killed one buck with my bow 4 seasons ago, I couldn't pass him up. I heard him run off and then start walking. Got down and saw bright red blood with a little gut right in the scrape. Didn't see my arrow so I backed out and gave him the night.

Dad came down this morning to help me trail it. Good thing he did. There was good blood and then we found my arrow with some guts on it. The good blood continued and then all of a sudden stopped after about 70 yards. We spent the next two and a half hours trailing the deer. It was just a spot here, 40 yards later one speck there. Luckily the deer kept a straight line and we found him. He ran about 300 yards. We couldn't believe how far he ran when we found him. He was quartering away when I shot and I caught the front part of the guts, nicked the liver, and caught one lung. The little gut I caught had clogged the 2" exit hole.

He ain't much, but he provided for an exciting hunt and I am happy with him.

Flame on about his size, I don't care. Its the smallest buck I have killed since my last bow buck 3 years ago.

I am not a hunter and really don't have anything against hunting if you are going to eat your kill. Just thought I would say that first.

This weekend my girl (no pics) and I went walking along the river and saw a full sized doe and a fawn. The fawn was about 5 feet from us as we walked up the trail. We stopped about 5 feet away just to admire it. It was probably about 4 ft tall at it's head. Not very big at all. It was really cool to see one up that close. As we walked away, it turned away from us a few steps until we passed it.

Then we walked about 1/4 mile further down the trail and saw the doe. It was probably a little on the smaller side. It was about 5 ft tall and somewhat thin. I would guess about 100 lbs maybe? Not an expert so I could be wrong. Looked about the size of your small buck above.

About 2 weeks ago, we saw a 6 point buck on that same trail. It was decent sized, but it was about 20 yds off the trail back in some brush and trees. That one I would have avoided if it had been closer to the trail. It seemed much bigger than your 6 point above. Is the point size relevant to body size?

Points are not relative to body size.

This was a typical 1 1/2 year old buck for our area. He weighed 110lbs live. In other parts of the US such as the north and the midwest, deer weigh much more than they do here. Whereas a 3 1/2 year old buck in my area will weigh about 165lbs, in states such as Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, 3 1/2 year old bucks can easily weigh in excess of 200lbs.

As far as points. Deer generally reach their "maximum" number of typical points at 2 1/2 years of age. They may put on more trash as they get older. My dad killed a 3 1/2 year old 6 point last year that weighed 170lbs.

And on a side note, I have watched several fawns play with their twin, and with their mother. Part of what hunting is all about.

Somebody needs to come hunt my land, all the deer are running through our roads. I've almost hit 5-6 in the last week. Dad won't let ppl rifle hunt on our land, and the usual guys who bow hunt haven't came this year.
