Rumble/hum and actual pitches?

Hey I had a question, i don't know if it falls under my amp, or my head unit or what-- I installed my 2 RE Hc 12's yesterday, approx. 5 cub. foot box, memphis 1.5kd amp, etc.. it hits crazy hard, but there's a few kinks i need to work out--

1. When bass is not hitting, whether in a song or even when the head unit is turned all the way to zero there is a constant rumble of just like the speakers moving i guess... I wired the power and rca on opposite sides of my car so that's not it.. my gain is only half up, bass boost is all the way off, etc.. and i dunno..

2. Also it hits really really hard but like the pitches of some of the songs are not on, and seems sometimes pretty mushed together and not clean.. if i make any sense.. so like is it maybe the phase shifter knob i need to mess with, or the crossover? head unit? I just want to do anything to give it some more sq if possible.. thanks Andrew

Anybody have any ideas? I am seriously needing some help, prom is coming up and I dont want my system to sound all stupid.
