My friend and i were arguing over a question earlier today:

Can playing your subwoofer with your trunk open damage the sub?

me: no fool!

him: OMG yes!

well, yall set one of us straight! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

That would be about the same as me playing my system in my truck with my windows down... no it won't hurt the sub. It just changes the way that the air and sound waves move around and makes it sound different

nope...and infinite baffle is like two Freeair 12's firing thru the back seat...they use the trunk as the enclosure...but unless they are majorly overpowered, IMHO they will be fine anyways...

a ported enclosure, the woofers doesn't know the trunk lid is open... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

If the trunk were open it would be a true 'infinite' baffle enclosure. The great outdoors would become the enclosure and the sound wouldn't change and the power handling wouldn't change and nothing would change. An IB system uses an enclosure larger than the Vas of the drivers involved. Once you have gotten larger than the Vas, the size of the enclosure no longer matters. The enclosure has no effect on the sub and provides no damping to the sub. The sub is entirely dependant on its suspension an motor for cone control rather than the enclosure which usually plays a larger role than the suspension in controlling cone movement.

As was said above, ported and sealed will sound a bit different but it will not hurt them at all.

Isn't true IB 3 x Vas? I've heard both sides, although anything larger than suspension compliance volume would seem to be moot. I'm not sure.

Yes it can damage the subs!!!...........

if its hailing outside
lmao, yeah, if its hailing outside haha,

of course it wouldent damage the sub if you opened a trunk, otherwise people in hatch backs suvs, etc. wouldent be able to use subs...
