All states allow home use of radio scanners, but a few make it illegal to have mobile use of a scanner, i.e. in a car. you can buy radio scanners at radio shack, and if it were illegal to own a scanner, then a company like radio shack wouldn't risk selling them.

they are actually pretty fun to play with. my friend has a handheld one that will pick up almost anything, CB, Weather Radio, etc., but i will not pick up on police bands. we were on a trip and there was a taco bell across the street from out hotel and we were listening to the drive thru orders lol.

in some states though it is legal to use a radio scanner capable of picking up police radio in a car. here is a wikipedia article on it

i live in ohio, so i can have a mobile scanner in my car, but while i am away at school in kentucky i won't be allowed to. mobile scanners are legal in ohio but not in kentucky. just know the laws and you will be fine.

when i was little, my grandparents had a police scanner and one day i sat by it with my walkie talkie just messin around and i pressed the button and started talking and someone on the other end must have heard me because as soon as i said somethin they were freaking out lol

you can also pick up portable phones which it totally legal because they use public frequencies, so listen to your neighbors having phone ***. I have one sitting on my desk and turn it on once in a while for a laugh. About a month ago they arrested 4 teenagers for driving around and flipping their dicks out at people lol

they kept getting calls and they were looking for like a half hour then they caught them in a parking lot, 4 teenagers in a yellow lancer. The cop said "what color was the Lancer with the kids flipping their penis's out at people" LOL

the one i have is a radioshack pro-94 dual trunking 1000 channel. and i got the cops on it perfect. So far today there was a disturbed male at an outpatient mental clinic. lol
