I have owned two component sets. With both sets I placed the tweeter in the door, flushmount, closest to the side view mirror locations and the woofer in the stock location near the feet. This is not normally recommended, but with the right tweeter adjustments I was able to get a pretty good sound stage. Idealy you should keep the tweeter and woofer within 6 inches of each other. There are prefabbed kick panels made by Q-Logic ($100) for most vehicles that will fit 5 1/4 component sets. The kick panel is one of the more common places for component sets. Another way to install the components is to mount the woofer and then try placing the tweeter in various spots by taping it to the door, the kick panel, the dash, the ceiling, or where ever your imagination can place it. From there you can decide what sounds the best to you and mount the tweeter.

Funny I just went to asked the same question to this competition winning car audio store. The mgr. said that ideally you want the tweeter, at most, only six inches away from the mid, on the same plane ( common angle, flat area, etc.) and angled towards you. However, if you want more "hi"s then you can move the tweeter further up towards you. Most cars where you can hear the "hi"s this is the reason for that. Plus it also depends on how much extra stuff you want to do to your car (i.e. kickpanels, making a hole in your door, etc.) People place tweeters from kickpanels, to the doors, or next to the side views, and the pillars (towards the windsheild or away from it). He also mentioned placing them on your roof pointed down was a waste. One thing he did stress was dynomat in your doors that contain the speakers.
