Pistol help

I have had a pistol hanging on my wall forever, I have no idea why it was in the case. I decided to take it out of the poorly made case to have a better look at it, and see if it is any good.

I took it out, found out that the trigger is hard to trigger, and the revolver does not revolve so good. Looks like a fairly good pistol to carry around, I read the top of it, it is very small print. It was made by Iver Johnson, and it had a bunch of dates after that, the most recent date was August 26, 1996 so it's not an antique unless the 1996 was 1896 and I read it wrong or something.

Anyone ever heard of these, and know if it's worth getting it fixed, or trying to sell it or something?

heres a pic, I decided to put it back in the case until I can get some more info on it.

A few more details I forgot to mention. The revolver is a hammerless revolver if you cant tell from the pic. Iam not even sure what size it is, I looked and could not find anything on it telling the size. Looks to be a .38, but might be a little smaller than a .38

Google is your friend:

You pic is a bit blurry but this is the closest I could find and it is a .38

According to the info I found this one I posted was manufacturered in 1903 so yours being made in 1896 certainly isn't an impossibility.

Yeah, I googled a little.

That ones kinda looks like mine, except my handle is not textured.

I will take it back out and look at the date again, but I could have sworn it said 1996.

It had a bunch of dates. I think the first date on there was 1903, but then there were several after that.

hmmm, there is no 18 or 19 before the 96...

Here is exactly what it says on top:

Iver Johnson's arms and cycle works Fitchburg Mass U.S.A

Pat'd APR 6 86 FEB 15 87 MAY 10 87 MAR 13 88 AUG 25 96. Pat's Pending.

Very good find railrocker. I just found the serial number on the gun. Starts with the letter 'D'

Hmmm, this is very interesting. Also noticed that the barrel is longer that the standard barrel, looks to be 3.5 inches instead of the standard 3 inch.

I'd take it to a gunsmith and have him go through it to see if it's in good shape to shoot. Then, go buy some blackpowder components and go shooting. BP pistols are fun to shoot. Long reload time but fun nonetheless.

My father and I BP hunt deer to extend our hunting season (as part of the season is set aside strictly for BP rifle use)

Even with the "smokeless" powder it's a one-shot affair so you'd better be pretty efficient with 'em.

If you don't knock it down (or at least fatally wound it) with the 1st shot after the smoke clears Bambi's dad isn't gonna hang around to give you another chance! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Aight you may not like this but it doesnt seem to be worth much as an antique. $175- $200. But it may be a decent gun. If your serious about carrying this around as your conceled you may want to look into something else pistols of this era are built like tanks and weigh a ton. You may want to take the pistol to a cabelas or something they can run a check on the serial #. Who knows it may be a custom job or a famous gun which would make it worth a whole lot more.

Heres where I found some for sale

Good luck!
