i have a rockford 551x (75*4). on the "birth certificate" it is said that the amp was tested at 14volts. yet it seems to be general knowlede that rockford amps and other expensive brand names are underrated.

i think they are correctly rated and the cheaper amp are OVERRATED.

i have mine running a 12" sub bridged. it is quite adequate. that means enuf bass for me in the car. not for the whole city to hear!!!1

Well, that would give you an OVERestimate because your calculation assumes 100% efficiency and its drawing max current at all times.

What i like to do is take the amount of fuses x 13.8 x the efficiency rating.

Me, I like to bust out my buddies clamp meter and FLUKE DMM, play my favorite frequency (47hz), then multiply the two RMS readings - boom there's your power at that note just under clipping. No, not peak power, but RMS power as the meters already are multiplying the average output by .707...

when pushed to just under clipping on a tone - try 50-60% at best for any amp.
