Ohms question

Hi, i'm not too familiar with this subject. I just got me some Polk/Momo subwoofers 400watts RMS, on the box says the impedance of the subs is 4ohms, The amp im planning on getting is 250watts x2 at 2ohms and 125 at 4ohms. My question is... Can i connect the subs to the amp at 2ohms? is it safe and will it affect quality and performance?? hopefully someone can help me with this question, thanks.

If your sub has dual voice coils rated at 4 ohms than you can use your amp at 2 ohms wired parallel...if it has only one voice coil rated at 4 ohms than you have to use your amp at 4 ohms...unless you want to break something...

Those subs are going to be uber-under powered, you will need a new amp that will put out at least 400 W X 2 @ 4 ohms or an amp that will put out 800 W X 1 @ 2 ohms. Below is a Phoenix Gold A1800D, a very good amp with a very reliable name at a very good cost. In order to wire it you would have to wire the sub in parallel, meaning you would wire the positive terminal from the amp to the positive terminals on the subwoofers, the same holding true for the negative. For a diagram, see the wiring options thread for SVC 4 ohm subwoofers. BTW, this is assuming your subs are single voice coil which I would assume they are.

If i get a single channel amp rated 800watts x 1 @2ohms.... to push the (2) 12" subs, will the amp divide the wattage in 2 (400w to each sub) or will it send 800W to each sub?

Sorry if im asking a stupid question, like i said im not familiar with this subject.
