No sound from head unit

Hello this is my first time here and I am having a problem with my head unit.

Its an Alpine CDA-7838 and I drive a 1985 Chevy Impala. My head unit powers on when I start my car and all but when I put a CD I get no sound at all. I can't test my radio because the guy who owned the car before, decided to cut the attenna connector off. So I have no idea if my antenna is a type of ground for my speakers. Is there a reason why I don't get any sound from my speakers? Speakers are hooked up correctly as is everything else. Please help, I'm just about fed up and very annoyed. Had the same problem with a Clarion DRB-4675, powered on but no sound to speakers and that was in a Mercury Cougar. Gave Clarion away because it wouldn't accept CDs. I really hope someone can help me. Thanks so much for anyone's help in advance.

Sincerely,

This can be caused by problems with speakers or speaker wiring. If you have a blown speaker that has a short in the voice coil, or a speaker wire grounded to metal, it can cause the deck's amplifier to shut down on all the speakers.

If you have a multimeter, you can troubleshoot by testing the resistance of the speaker wires. From the deck harness, get an ohm reading between the positive and negative wire of each speaker. They should fall in the 3-5 ohm range. If you don't find a problem, then put one test probe on the ground wire and test each speaker wire with the other probe. You shouldn't have any continuity between the speaker wires and the ground wire. (Make sure you disconnect the head unit before you start this testing).

Another way to troubleshoot is to disconnect all the speakers and then hook them up again one at a time. See if there's one that kills the sound when you connect it.

Well I tinkered with my speaker wires today. I pulled out the factory 6x9s to install my new ones. Just to try, I connected the factory 6x9 directly to the head unit while it was on. Getz and Gilberto came right through loud and clear. It was sooooo cool! I then tested head unit's speaker wires to car's speaker wires and found that if the wrong wire was connected then it would cut the sound completely. Hence why I had no sound, speakers were completely hooked up wrong and I thought I had it right. But other than that the Alpine really socks it to the 6x9s. Its awesome!

Thanks so much for your help. You were right.

Sincerely,
