New job opinions

Take the loss prev, the room for advancement will make up diff in the long run. Take from a guy whose wife passed away too early, take advantage of every chance to spend time with the fam. It will all work out, commisions are not garanteed. I like the fact that you did consult with the wife first, if momma ain't happy, the house ain't happy...lol. Hope things work out for y'all no matter what you decide

If you're making 45k and can't live with a 5k drop in pay, you're doing something wrong or somehow living outside your means, even with a house and family.

As long as you'd enjoy the work, it's a no brainer to have more time for the family, and an actual career with potential for an overall increase in pay in the long run.

My main concern would be job security. How is each company doing and where are you compared to the median pay rate for each position? If you take the new position, what are the chances of the company needing to cut back expenses and lay you off and replace you with someone willing to do the job for $30k annually?

As long as the job security is there and you have a potential for raises I would go with #2 . Probably eventually make the same and spend way more time with the family and get vacation

Well guys and gals, I received an offer today I could not pass up. Ward County corrections called and offered me a position. Its gonna be good to be on with State benefits. Crappy part is its 12hr shifts. But for training I will be on 4 days at 10hr shifts. When I clear training I go to 12hr shifts. There are three shifts 7am-7pm, 3pm-3am, or 7pm-7am. I don't really care which one I go on. Its a great oppurtunity with the potential to move up.

Congrats, man. Long shifts aren't the best, but at least they won't be every single day. Being a state/government employee definitely has its perks.

It only starts at $18.11 an hr. Taking a huge paycut, but I will have great medical insurance and the oppurtunities. Right now I am at a dead end job.

I am in almost the exact same situation and if I could find a similar salary with benefits and less hours I would do it in a heart beat. My son is 5 and my daughter is 3. I just got divorced last month but we've been seperated for about 7 months.

I have my kids %50 of the time and being a single parent I realized how little time I'm giving them. DO THE SECOND OPTION

Doing, what seems to me, like a strong step forward for you and your family! Goodluck!

I hope so man. I know its a great opportunity. Just hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the ***
Success isnt a linear path, you need to take risks, failure and success will interchange, but, as we all wish, success comes 2xfold or more!

Goodluck!

My question for the OP is he lives in North Dakota which has an unemployment rate of 2.9%. Seriously. All of this is due to the state opening up fracking all over the place. If I'm him I take whatever job clears up my nights so I can go to school and take some AutoCAD courses and get on with a survey company drafting for around 30 bucks an hour starting. Or become an entry level rodman and make 13-14/hr. starting but work my way up fast to crew chief. Most of these places have excellent health ins. and other business because they're in direct competition with each other for the same workers. I'm in this business in Tulsa, OK by the way. If it ever dries up here, North Dakota would be my next stop. Opportunities are endless and it shows no signs of slowing up. Just my 2 cents...
