The 13W6v2s that I heard the other day were pretty nice. I've been using JL since before you knew who they were. I have yet to be disappointed with anything but the W0 series. I own 7 JL subs right now. If you want to be the loudest guy around, go with another brand. It's that simple. If you want an excellent sounding woofer that doesn't need a lot of power, blends in nicely with a good set of components and doesn't need a large enclosure then JL might be right for you. Different strokes for different folks. Some people are all about image and they run W7's. The over-the-top cost is one of the primary selling points for them. They want people to know that they have money to burn. They want something that people know. They don't care if they can get louder with some other brand. JL is the top of the mainstream heap and many people will pay whatever it takes to have what is seen by the masses as the best. Others want great sound and don't care about how loud it gets. I'm still looking for subs that can sound as good with 125W as my 12 year old 10W1. My original W6s come close. Before you think that I am just puffing on a big JL boner, I own a XXX 12. I haven't gotten it installed yet but I am a bit daunted by how much power this thing is going to want. JL isn't for everyone. Most of the people that bash on JL are expecting something from them that the drivers were not designed to deliver. That's along the line of hating a Ferrari because the seats and ride aren't as comfortable as a Caddy. Wasn't designed to be comfortable, it was designed to be fast. JLs weren't designed to be loud they were designed to sound good. If they're not for you, then fine. That doesn't mean that they aren't good, just that they don't suit your needs.
For any sub, there is another that can beat it in some aspect. There are many subs that are louder than JLs. There are subs that sound better than XXXs. Set any sub up for true accurate sound and almost any sub can be made louder. Set any sub up for pure SPL and almost any can sound better. Some can get louder than others in a pure SQ setup, but louder is not better in that setting. Some subs are a good compromise and can retain some semblence of accuracy and linearity while getting righteously loud. You must choose the sub that will fit your needs and desires. For the vast majority of people, JL subs are not going to fit the bill. Factor in the suggested retail price (which is high because there are no shortage of takers at the high price, supply and demand) and many people think that they are over-rated. Overpriced and overexposed maybe, but for the true SQ person, they are usually just what is needed.
