Need help picking a head unit

I need a head unit, but not sure what to pick. It'll be driving (hopefully) a Hifonics amp to a IDMAX12, and some 7inch coaxls up front. It'd be a plus if it could do mp3 cd's.

I was looking into an Alpine unit, but they have many differant models, not sure what I really need. Also, do I want one with preamps or not ? I'm *completely* new to car audio, and the head unit is the one piece of gear that I can't figure out for myself.

get a good alpine head unit and get one with 3 4 volt preouts, the 9811, 9813, and the 9815 are pretty good, look at ebay if you want them real cheap

Thanks, but my budget is a bit higher than that... Seems like I'll stick with an Alpine 9813, or 9815, unless someone has something bad to say about it.
