MIT reinvents the Post-It note with...Post-It notes

its got a super mini radio transmitter it in. they have them in those nifty credit cards you can swipe at the gas station places, the little key chain things or whatever.

ive seen it gone as far as a bar somewhere down south (miami?) has a RFID capsule it puts in its high paying customers arm so when he goes to the bar they just give him a drink and it goes on his tab - and when the night is done the RFID tracks what he had and when he walks out it pays his bill.

crazy cool stuff. from what i understand, companies are working on lowering the cost of the rf transmitter (the thing on the back of the sticky in pictures) so that they can put it in consumer bought products - for example like the grocery store, where you will walk through a little gate and all the products will ring up via RFID tags in the packaging. to my knowledge, it costs like 30 cents to install RFID per package.

it will happen in the foreseeable future.

Ive been working with RFID tech for quite a while now.

Large companies like Walmart no longer have receivers that break down skids at the terminals to count every item. Now they simply require each manufacture install the tags in the item itself and one for the master carton.

There are readers at each of the dock doors. The package gets put on a skid and shrink wrapped. As it is loaded on a truck the readers create a bill of laiding that tells the company what is on the truck. The truck arrives at the customer and the readers again tell them how many cartons and what is in each carton. There is no longer a need to break down and sign for stuff. When read the info is EDI'd to the manufacture and then set up for invoicing.

For the book, the post-it would tell you what book it is and where in the general area its located.

REQ, the cost of the RFID tags has GREATLY been reduced. Ive seen costs of 7 cents per tag in decent bulk quantities.

Is this with Symbol technologies, independant firms, whatever? You already know why I want to know...even though I am late to the game, I can find some second wave firms that may be able to establish good position.

They actually put a RFID INSIDE their arm? Weird...but cool I guess.

btw, some of those tags are in products you buy, so the can follow your purchases for market research. In theory, they can drive by your house, see what you have, and if its in your arm, then who aand where you are.
