Looking For Honest and Knowledgable Opinions

Recently my friend put in two 12" JL W0's, they aren't exactly the most powerful thing in the world, but they hit pretty hard anyways, and he only payed around 600 bucks for the whole package...subs, amp, installation, etc..

Anyways, after seeing and hearing his, I've decided I'd like to get one myself. I'm not planning to go all out and spend 1500 bucks for competition type purproses, so don't come here reccomending that I should get 4 JL w7's.

I went to a store and picked up a paper with their packages. I've narrowed it down to three of the packages. Here they are...

  • 2 12" JL Audio 12W0 subs (500 watts total) - $639 installed
  • 2 12" Eclipse 6000 series subs (700 watts total) - $639 installed
  • 2 12" Kicker Comp VR DVC subs (1600 watts total) - $689 installed

Like I said, I'm not going for competition type sound here, just enough to satisfy me.

Also, I have 4 amps to choose from that can be apart of the package.

  • Kenwood 505 Watt Subwoofer Class AB Amp - X521 2 year warranty
  • Kicker 400 Watt Subwoofer Class AB Amp - KX350.2 1 year warranty
  • Eclipse 500 Watt Subwoofer Class AB Amp - PA4212 3 year warranty
  • Coustic 600 watt Subwoofer Class AB Amp - 601 SE 1 year warranty

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff. I just want to hear some opinions from knowledgeable people. Thanks a ton.

Hmm, thanks a lot. I'll definitely take a look at those links and read up a little bit about the products. The only thing is, I'm not sure if I really want to go through all the trouble of ordering all these things and not really knowing all that much about them.

But of the three packages I listed, is there anyone that sticks out as the best buy? I'll most likely get one of them just to keep it simple. But I really do appreciate your help, like I said, I'll make sure I check out those links.

Thanks.

The package includes the subs, amp, standard amp installation and a 4 guage wire kit.

Also, is there any reason you said 8's instead of 12's?

The 8s he is referring to means 8 ohm subs. Still the 12 inch woofers though.

If I were you, I would really follow what Jmac is saying. I would go the route of ebay subs and amps. The PGs and the JBL or Visonik amps sound like a good plan. You will save a ton of money and be way louder than your buddies JLs.

Thanks fellas. A couple more questions...

If I were to have a subwoofer and amp installed, is it absolutely necessary to get new speakers or a cd player? Obviously an upgrade in both would be nice, but I'm not exactly rolling in money here. I have a 98' 4Runner, the stereo system as it is now isn't very bad at all for stock. With putting an amp into the equation give too much power to the speakers, or does it just power the subs?

Sorry, I'm pretty clueless about car audio as I said, but that's why I'm here.

ok, just wanted to quote you...not saying this is bad, it's why you are here. So, please listen to us. Ok, everything you listed from the shop ***** for the price you are paying for it. You are absolutely, horribly being ass raped on price. So, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen to us when we recommend other options to you, don't take that like i'm angry or pissed...i just hate to see people get ripped off. So, that being said...look at JMAC's options. Also, to add into the mix...

2 Resonant Engineering re12's or se12'

http://www.resonantengineering.com (call for direct pricing)

2 re12s~ $160+shipping 2 se12s~$340 $shipping

Amplifier:

Jbl 600.1 or profile cl1200

Depending on which subs you wanted...(jbl for the re12's and profile for the se12's) ~$220 plus shipping

Ok, that is $560(at most) ...leaving $120 left for wiring kit, box, and various other materials. I'd go with the SEs, You can get box plans here for free, and any of us would be more than willing to walk you through an install...really, it's not that hard...i learned my first install by asking here too. AND, if you absolutely don't want to install, opt for the re12's and it's only $380 leaving $300 left for install. EITHER of those options listed, or JMAC's suggestion would sound better and be louder for less money than ANY of the setups you listed. peace
